“Doctor, Are You a Sexologist?” The Surprising Connection Between Hormones, Relationships, and Quality of Life

← Back to The Golden Journal Hormones, relationships and quality of life — Golden Cosmetic Center

A question from a patient recently caught me completely off guard.

During a consultation, he looked at me and asked:

“Doctor, are you a sexologist?”

I smiled and replied: “No. Why do you ask?”

His answer was even more interesting.

“Some friends told me about a treatment you provided that practically saved their marriage. I only asked for the name of the clinic because I felt it would be inappropriate to ask for more details. So I decided to schedule an appointment myself.”

At that moment, I immediately understood what treatment he was referring to.

It wasn’t couples therapy. It wasn’t relationship counseling. And it certainly wasn’t sex therapy.

It was something many people never think about when they begin experiencing changes in their quality of life: their hormones.

Every week, I meet patients who come into my office feeling exhausted, unmotivated, mentally foggy, irritable, and disconnected from the person they used to be. Many struggle with poor sleep, weight gain, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating, and a significant decline in sexual desire.

Most of them believe these changes are simply a normal part of aging. They assume they just have to learn to live with it.

But in many cases, there is an underlying hormonal imbalance contributing to these symptoms—one that can be identified, evaluated, and treated appropriately.

What surprises many patients is how interconnected hormones are with nearly every aspect of life.

When hormonal health is optimized, patients often report improvements that go far beyond physical symptoms:

And while our goal is never to “save a marriage,” something interesting often happens when people start feeling better.

Relationships improve. Communication improves. Confidence returns. People begin engaging with life in ways they haven’t in years.

I’ve seen patients rediscover hobbies they abandoned, return to the gym, feel more productive at work, and reconnect with partners, friends, and family. Not because we changed who they were—but because they finally felt like themselves again.

That’s why hormone optimization is about much more than hormones. It’s about quality of life.

It’s about helping people feel stronger, healthier, and more energized. It’s about restoring the ability to show up fully in the moments that matter most.

Because when we improve our health, we often improve much more than we expected. And sometimes, the transformation extends far beyond the individual—it positively impacts everyone around them.
